Chinese New Year Print Project

For many Chinese people, spending Chinese New Year with families are the most exciting thing in the whole year. Among all these fun activities, my favorite part is to decorate our home with Chinese New Year prints. There are a variety of types for the New Year Print -- We hang up the Door Spirits (门神) Print on the door to keep evil spirits away, Wealth Spirit (财神) Print on the living room wall to pray for an abundant year, Kitchen Spirit (灶神) Print in the Kitchen to protect kitchen from fire accidents. There are also some other popular prints that you can hang up at home.


In the Chinese New Year Print Unit, students learn about the history and major categories of the prints. And then they make a design of a Chinese New Year Print based on the legends of the Door Spirits, Wealth Sprit, and Kitchen Spirit. Students can incorporate their favorite characters into this New Year Print design to make it relevant to their cultures.
